seedlings

Want to get an early start on your spring garden? You’re in luck because Mary and Jim, bloggers at Old World Garden Farms, recently posted a thorough how-to about starting your spring seeds indoors, for cheap.

Here’s the logic behind starting seeds indoors:

“…it’s an incredibly satisfying feeling to make a tiny seed grow into a beautiful plant for you and your family to enjoy. It also can be a tremendous cash saver – plants can be expensive when purchasing them all at your local greenhouse. Especially if you want to grow specialty or heirloom seeds that are hard to find.”

What’s even better is money-saving tips are given right off the bat. No heating mats or specialty lights are needed!

Materials needed (for 4 flats of seeds):

  • One (1) 32 quart bag of potting soil or seed starter mix.
  • Two (2) dual-bulb fluorescent shop lights.
  • Four (4) empty flats with seed tray inserts.
  • Wood for hanging the lights, or whatever else you choose.

After following several easy steps, you’ll have a workable seed-starting setup.

According to Jim and Mary, it takes about 6 to 8 weeks for your seedling to grow strong enough to transplant outside. Before planting outside, however, they suggest giving the plants time to adjust to the outdoor sunlight and temperature, a process called “hardening off.”

If you want to take your seed-starting to the next level, there’s also a tutorial on how to build an indoor seed-starting rack for cheap.

The Social Silo is the new “social face” of the newspaper Farm and Dairy. We want to be a community blog about the rural world. About manure. About county fair prize-winning pie recipes. Just not in the same sentence. We want to foster communication between farmers and nonfarmers, to share different perspectives, to make us all think and grow a little. We want to ask questions, and listen to your answers.
