I heard a lot of predictions this year that we might go from summer directly into winter. Most of it is based off the mild winter of 2011-2012 and the early spring and the hot, dry summer.

Of course, we did have a fall this year and it technically continues through Dec. 20. But the weather the past few weeks has definitely been a little more like early winter, and it’s going to continue.

The National Weather Service predicts lows in the lower 30s and upper 20s the first part of the week, although it will break a bit by weekend when highs will reach the 60s.

The worst part for farmers is the amount of rain we’ve received. It rained for about a week straight in Wooster, and I dumped my rain gauge about every three days, finding it overflowing twice.

I drove to Marion, Ohio, last week and I couldn’t believe how much harvesting equipment I saw parked along the road because it was too muddy to get anything done.

I feel bad for the farmers, who not only had one of the worst droughts in 50 years but now the flooding and ponding of fields.

Depending on where you drive, some fields have absorbed the water better than others and may dry out relatively soon. Others could take weeks or more and may need to freeze over before harvesting.

The good news is we’ve got less than two months before a new year, and I don’t think very many people will be sad to see this one end. We were fortunate to have received the rains we did and some areas in central and eastern Ohio turned out pretty good. But others saw their yields cut in half or worse and they’ll be feeling this well into the future.

I guess all we can do is hope that next year gets back to normal a little. We had a record wet spring last year and a record dry spring and summer this year, so let’s hope and pray things are balanced out!
