It seemed like everywhere I went Thursday and Friday, I was bumping into Farm and Dairy readers. And if I wasn’t bumping into them, they were coming up to me to be sure I saw them.

I think it had something to do with the places I was at — the North Central Ohio Dairy Grazing Conference and Power Show Ohio.

I was surprised at how many names I remembered, but like often happens, there were quite a few instances where I needed a reminder.

Recognizing others

It’s nice to see people you know, especially when you’re trying to sell a publication. But at the same time, it can be a bit tiring juggling so many different acquaintances and trying to remember their faces.

I hate having to admit to someone that I cannot remember their name, but it happens. I usually remember part of the name, or maybe some physical detail, but I may struggle to come up with the exact name.

I guess confessing that I don’t recognize someone is better than bluffing. On more than one occasion I’ve found myself pretending to know someone who knows me, and then thinking to myself, who in the world are they?

I think part of the problem is people have seen my picture in the paper — at the paper I worked at before and in my blog — and so they recognize me but I’ve never seen them before. That happened at least twice this past week for sure, and it’s kind of an unfair advantage!

I was fooled

One guy who I’ve gotten to know fairly well the past three years at the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board meetings came up to me at the power show and put his hand on my shoulder, while I was talking to one of the venders.

I turned around and I honestly couldn’t recognize him. He had on a ball cap and what looked like a couple layers of casual jackets.

And when he told me who he was (former State Veterinarian Dave Glauer) I apologized for not recognizing him. Almost every other time I had seen him he was wearing business dress clothes. I don’t think I had ever seen him in anything else.

As you can see, it was a busy end to my week. And I’m still finishing up some of the pictures and articles I wrote from both events. Getting those names right is imperative, because they will appear in print.

In the pictures below, you can see some of the many people I met last week. You may recognize a few familiar faces, but if there’s some you don’t know, you’re not alone!
