June has sneaked up on us, and that means Dairy Month is here!
It’s time to think about all of the great things the dairy industry gives us consumers!

Not only do we get cheese and milk, but who can forgo ice cream?! Not me! Chocolate, vanilla and cookies and cream… They all call my name!

Our dairy farmers work hard every day to bring us these delicious, creamy treats. It’s not a trade that ends at 5 p.m. everyday. Dairy farming is an industry that goes 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and for that they should be commended.

I’m not just talking about the dairy cow industry either. We have to remember the goat milk industry and, now, the sheep milk industry, which is new to the state of Ohio.

Here at the Farm and Dairy, Dairy Month is on our minds! And in response, we are having a photo contest, Just Say Cheese!

Anything goes! Well, almost anything!

We received a photo today that shows Farm and Dairy readers are willing to go out of their way to have some fun with agriculture.

I can’t give away what is in the photo, but it is a great shot! I can’t wait to be able to share it with readers!

Until then, get your cameras out and go out to the barn. Or better yet, take a ride in the countryside and see what you can find.

With a little creativity, I bet we can find some great photos of the dairy industry! So let’s grab a camera and head out because I’m sure there’s an adventure or great story behind the photos we have received or the photos you can find.

To see some of the submissions we’ve gotten, have a look at our contest photo gallery.

The Social Silo is the new “social face” of the newspaper Farm and Dairy. We want to be a community blog about the rural world. About manure. About county fair prize-winning pie recipes. Just not in the same sentence. We want to foster communication between farmers and nonfarmers, to share different perspectives, to make us all think and grow a little. We want to ask questions, and listen to your answers.
