It’s that time of the year when we start putting together two of our biggest issues of the year. We call it the progress edition here at the Farm and Dairy.

And with the biggest issue of the year comes the chance to do some of our best stories of the year. With that, comes the responsibility of searching for quality story ideas. That’s the fun part — searching for the story ideas I’ve tucked away in the past year just for this edition.

You would probably be surprised at some of the ways, my mind comes up with story ideas. Here are just a few of them!

One is the most obvious: award winners. You or your farm may not have won the award this year, but I may have stashed that idea away when you did. So I start combing through my folder and there you are!

Another is by word of mouth. I may have been out to a farm in your area and another farmer may have suggested it. I try to take down as much information from the person giving me the idea and then go back and track down the story.

I always appreciate the help of someone trying to give me a story idea. The Farm and Dairy staff loves to hear from our readers and want to know what you want to read. So if you are giving us a story idea, that is letting us know what you would like to read.

Sometimes, an organization may issue a news release or the Soil and Water Conservation District in your county may help me find the story I’m looking for. I’m always appreciative for any help I can get.

A fourth way is actually something I came up with myself. When I’m at a show or fair, I keep my eyes open for a farm that may be interesting to our readers. I either write down the information from a farm sign or I take a picture. Then when I get back to the office, it goes into the folder.

So if you are at a show and see me taking notes or snapping picture of a sign, don’t be alarmed and don’t be surprised if I call you up one day. You may be the next story I’m looking for!

(If you’ve got any story ideas for us to add to our folders, please let us know: email editorial@farmanddairy.com!)
