We didn’t realize that when we went live with our blog, we’d be putting it to use so quickly with some major news regarding our publication, Farm and Dairy. Effective mid-May, the Farm and Dairy will be switching from delivery by the U.S. Postal Service to private contractors.

The switch is being made because Farm and Dairy inadvertently forgot to renew its periodical mailing permit for the year 2011 and was not permitted to retroactively submit the renewal, and is thus not permitted to use the U.S. Postal Service to deliver its newspapers for the rest of the calendar year.

“I take full responsibility for my actions and do apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused the Farm and Dairy and its subscribers,” said Frank Baldwin, circulation director. “Over the next few weeks, I will be working diligently with the U.S. Postal Service to reinstate our permit so that we may resume mailing in 2012. If you have any questions or concerns, please fill free to contact me.”

The final day for delivery by mail will be May 12. This will ensure we have enough time to hire and train the necessary personnel. The Farm and Dairy will be asking for our readers’ patience during this time.

However, the Farm and Dairy does feel there is an advantage for our faithful readers, due to some delivery complaints we have heard. Our publisher Scot Darling said he is disappointed but hopes home delivery by person may benefit our readers, at least through the year’s end.

“The number of unsatisfactory publication watches has increased dramatically over the past five years,” he said. (A publication watch is something the U.S. Postal Service can do to find out why a subscriber is continually having delivery problems.) “We are hoping that by changing our delivery method, we can get our product to our readers with fewer problems.”

Farm and Dairy is currently looking for youth and adult carriers in the tri-state delivery area. It is a one-day-a-week delivery day and you will receive 35 cents per delivery, with routes averaging around 200 customers and a delivery radius of 100 miles. If interested, please email the Farm and Dairy at circulation@aprilfoolsday.com.

UPDATE: April Fools!

The Social Silo is the new “social face” of the newspaper Farm and Dairy. We want to be a community blog about the rural world. About manure. About county fair prize-winning pie recipes. Just not in the same sentence. We want to foster communication between farmers and nonfarmers, to share different perspectives, to make us all think and grow a little. We want to ask questions, and listen to your answers.
